Art Time” classes for ages 6-12 Year Olds

The Art Time program develops creative thinking and fosters self-expression through art. Each class starts with a warm-up exercise that targets specific thinking skills and stimulates creative process. Then children apply what they’ve just learned to the art technique presented that day. Students will work with variety of high quality materials including soft/oil/ wax pastels, foil, poster paint, watercolors, acrylics, clay and much more….

Some of the art projects are designed in the styles of the world’s famous artists. While learning new art techniques and discovering different styles, it is up to the children to decide exactly how their art will turn out.

Middle School Literature Class for Homeschoolers

This course is for homeschooled Middle School students (ages 12-14). The classes will be held at my home near Marshall High School on 4 consecutive Thursdays from 12 -1:30 pm beginning February 9 - March 2.

The book we will be studying in this course is Bud, Not Buddy,
by Christopher Paul Curtis. The story takes place in Flint, Michigan during the Great Depression and is narrated by the Title character, Bud, who is a 10 year old orphan, already mature beyond his age in many ways, struggling to find his family roots. The narrative is engaging, fun, humorous, a bit scary and even sad at times.

The students will be required to read at home between classes in addition to the reading we will be doing in class. We will be
using various activities to discover the plot, character, setting, theme, and historical, cultural, and emotional aspects of the book. Vocabulary and some writing will be included.

Classes will be limited to 4-6 students. The cost is $60, plus the cost of the book. Students should also have a spiral notebook for class notes and homework assignments.

I look forward to working with your children.

San Antonio Botanical Gardend Children’s Vegetable Garden Program

About the Program:

The Garden is proud to present one of the nation’s oldest youth gardening programs. Children ages 8-13 get their hands-on horticulture with the help of our partner organizations, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Bexar County Master Gardeners.

The Children’s Vegetable Garden Program at the San Antonio Botanical Garden is an opportunity for children to grow their own vegetables and ornamental plants with the help of instructors from the Texas A&M AgriLIFE Extension Service and Bexar County Master Gardeners, as well as other volunteer organizations. Each child is allotted a 3.5’x28’ garden plot. Children will have fun growing different types of seeds, vegetables, and ornamental annual flowers. Children can also earn their Junior Master Gardener certification by participating in fun, hands-on activities each week after they have tended their garden. In order to gain the most from the learning experience and to help ensure successful growing, participants are required to attend all sessions (two absences are allowed). Families are welcome to share the gardening experience with their child. A parent or guardian must stay with their child.

Fee: Thanks to a generous donation from our friends at Milberger’s Landscaping and Nursery, the Spring Vegetable Garden Program will be $40 per child or $60 for two children to share a plot (non-refundable). Ages 8-13.

Donations welcome.

SASPA welcomes Homeschool Students and Parents

Adding dance into your homeschool routine is a growing trend around the country because it is an excellent way to get your student’s education moving!
At SASPA we offer a curriculum that motivates and inspires your child!
Benefits of Dance in Education

There are many benefits of introducing dance in to your homeschool curriculum. The first being that movement and expression come naturally to young children. Secondly your child can have fun through dance as they are gaining important lessons in fitness and bodily awareness. Lastly dancing burns calories and tones muscles, which meets physical education requirements, but it also fulfills standards for arts and music appreciation.

Other Benefits

Dance requires students to identify rhythm and keep count of music. Some forms, such as Mexican folklorico dance or Irish dance, ask students to remember and perform complex mathematical patterns.

Dance can also increase attention and focus and can be integrated throughout the day to help kinesthetic learners, students with special needs, or kids diagnosed with ADHD expend energy and organize thoughts through focused movement.

SASPA HOMESCHOOL PROGRAM

We offer classical ballet, pointe, jazz and tap on Tuesdays each week during the regular year.

Students may take all classes offered or tailor the classes which they are interested in. For example, a student may take ballet and tap and have no interest in jazz. In addition, home school students are also welcome to take classes from the regular class schedule if desired.

Please see the classes offered to Homeschool students below. If you have any questions regarding the home school program please call the school at (210) 495-2787 or come observe a class that you are interested in.
