Landmark Cases Season 2 and Supreme Court Resources

Beginning on February 26, C-SPAN will begin airing Landmark Cases Season 2. The series will air on Mondays at 9 PM. This 12-part series delves into cases that represent some of the tipping points in our nation’s story and our evolving understanding of rights in America. Art Time classes for Homeschoolers ages 6-12y.o.

The Art Time program develops creative thinking and fosters self-expression through art. Each class starts with a warm-up exercise that targets specific thinking skills and stimulates creative process. Then children apply what they’ve just learned to the art technique presented that day. Students will work with variety of high quality materials including soft/oil/ wax pastels, foil, poster paint, watercolors, acrylics, clay and much more….
Some of the art projects are designed in the styles of the world’s famous artists. While learning new art techniques and discovering different styles, it is up to the children to decide exactly how their art will turn out.

The Civil War divided the country. The war spurred division not only between the states, but also between families, friends, and neighbors. Clement Laird Vallandigham — the “wily agitator” — as Lincoln once called him, was an advocate for states’ rights and publicly opposed both the Lincoln administration and the Civil War. We are honored to be able to offer you a free lesson plan to study Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Black History Month. The plan includes the full text of David Dinkins’s “Martin Luther King, Jr.” a moving eulogy written just after King was slain in 1968.

This plan gives you and your students the chance to:

  • Share questions raised by the text
  • Take directed notes to focus closely on a textual theme
  • Have a civil, open-ended exchange of ideas
  • Share further thoughts by using our specific writing prompts

Martin Luther King, Jr Day, Current Events

To commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on January 16th, C-SPAN Classroom has aggregated a number of video resources to help your students learn more about the day, key events in his life, and his legacy related to the civil rights movement.

Students will hear about the first Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in a short archival vignette, explore the “One Life: Martin Luther King, Jr.” exhibit at the Smithsonian, as well as learn about the impact of his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” They also hear from Rep. John Lewis about the March on Washington, and about the inclusion of young people in marches from Ahmad Ward at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.

Common Sense Economics for Life

This is the essential course for individuals who may only take one economics and personal finance course in their life. It prepares individuals to be strategic consumers, wise savers, diversified investors, and responsible citizens. The course includes 17 modules, paced at roughly one week per module. Students begin with a basic introduction to 12 Key Elements of Economics, followed by modules on the Sources of Economic Progress, the Role of Government, and Practical Personal Finance. Each module includes readings, fun and engaging popular media video clips, audios, discussion questions, homework assignments, quizzes, and exams.

No prior knowledge is required. The course is not math-heavy. Instead, students are encouraged to develop their economic reasoning skills and apply them to the development of a more fulfilling life!

Picture Your World at Land Heritage Institute — January

Join us for the 2017-2018 season of Picture Your World hosted by Green Spaces Alliance of South Texas. Open to youth ages 8-18, the Picture Your World weekend workshops teach photographic composition and technique through hands-on demonstration, and constructive critique. Participants will produce a visual memory of their day and begin a creative portfolio while experiencing the wonders of the natural environment. Each workshop is led by the Picture Your World Program Manager, Carra Garza, along with a professional photographer, and a Master Naturalist. Participants may bring their own digital camera or, we will provide one for you.

The Land Heritage Institute is a living land museum on 1200 acres of open space along the banks of the Medina River. Located on the far south side of San Antonio, The institutes’ mission is one of preserving, maintaining and interpreting 10,000 years of continual human habitation.

San Antonio City-Wide Math Contest for 5th Graders

School of Science and Technology is a college-prep, high performing Kindergarten-12th public charter school that focuses on math, science, and computer technologies to provide high quality educational opportunities. The School of Science and Technology (SST) cordially invites your child to the San Antonio city-wide 5th Math Contest at SST-Main (1450 NE Loop 410, San Antonio TX, 78209) on Saturday, February 3rd , 2018.

SST Math Contest provides a valuable opportunity for students to improve their math skills in a variety of math subject areas. We hope that you will take this opportunity to give your child a chance to demonstrate what they have learned throughout the year and further develop their problem-solving abilities by bringing your students or teams to our contest.

Top 5th grade students will get below awards. Students will take an individual multiple-choice test focusing on various topics including; mathematical process, numerical representations-relationships, computations, algebra, geometry, probability, data analysis, mental math, and speed math. There are 3 difficulty levels questions on the test. Though test is challenging, we hope they will be fun for everyone. We have also included several easy questions on the tests so that new competitors can develop their confidence without getting discouraged. The top 30 contestants will receive certificates commemorating their achievement in addition to the top prizes listed below.

These are the awards according to the Multiple Choice Exam results:

1st Place: Laptop

2nd Place: Sony PlayStation 4 Pro 1TB Console

3rd Place: Apple iPad 32 GB

4th Place: Apple Watch Series 1

There is no registration fee for this competition. It is open to all 5th grade students in San Antonio Metropolitan Area.
